They’re are many ways of helping your self to recovery, getting to know yourself well is a good start, there are a lot of self help books on the market witch are really good and easy to read and not to expensive to purchase.

Ways to self help

  • Accept what has happened to you
  • Understand and believe it was not your fault
  • Read self help books
  • Gain as much support as you can
  • Write letters to your inner child and let your inner child write back to you
  • Learn to love and value yourself
  • Meditation-Enables you to refocus your attention that brings about an altered state of consciousness. People who meditate feel more relaxed and can even improve health.
  • Yoga and breathing exercises are two natural and effective treatments in reducing anxiety and creating a relaxed state of well-being.
  • Use the coping techniques for flashbacks/panic attacks and memories as explained under coping strategies
  • Set yourself little goals that are achievable
  • Do nice things for yourself
  • Distraction. may include things you enjoy e.g. painting/writing/sports etc

Self help is about you and what helps you to learn to move on, you have to find ways that help you and use your inner strength, self help is useful along side good support and therapy

A lot of survivors use the following ways to cope with their past.

  • Alcohol and drug abuse.
  • Obsessive behaviour and strict routines.
  • Self harming e.g. cutting, scratching or burning.
  • Forgetting or minimising the abuse.
  • Turning to God/Religion.
  • Breaking ties with, or confronting, the abuser.
  • Speaking about it and receiving support.
  • Fighting back e.g. speaking publicly or helping other survivors.
  • Working to protect children from abuse.
  • Writing about abuse.
